Youth

Our Youth Department

As children age out of the kids’ programs, they funnel into our youth programs where they establish and nurture strong bonds of sisterhood and brotherhood. These programs, created for youth between the ages of 13 and 30, span a wide array of activities that cater to the holistic wants and needs of growing young Muslims, from seasonal trips like white water rafting and apple picking, to weekly halaqat, sports initiatives, community service projects, mentorship opportunities, and professional development programming.

Weekly Islamic Youth Programs

Friday Night Halaqah

  • Fridays at 7:30PM

Our weekly youth halaqah (spiritual discussion circles) is one of our most popular and long-standing youth programs. For over 15 years, our halaqat cover the most basic tenets of our faith such as Salah and the Seerah, while also tackling the most sensitive, nuanced, pressing issues facing our youth such as the Muslim-American identity, substance use, family dynamics, music, gender relations, mental health, and much, much more. Though the topics, speakers, and exact time might change, you can always count on Friday Nights being the place to BE for young Muslims in Brooklyn. Check out the most recent halaqah flyer for this season’s topic, speaker, and timing!

Student Jumuahs

  • Fridays at 3:40PM

We understand that the typical Jumuah times leaves students with little to no options to fulfill their obligatory duty of completing the Jumuah Prayer. That’s why we hold Salat-ul-Jumuah specifically for students weekly throughout the school season! We have a team of young khateebs who are trained and mentored by our resident sheikhs to give the Jumuah khutbah and lead the prayer every week. We hope to see you at our next Student Jumuah!

MAS Sabiqoon Sisters’ Halaqah

  • Fridays at 6PM

While our Friday Night Halaqah is open to both brothers and sisters, our Sabiqoon Halaqah is a necessary sisters’ only safe space where sisterhood is built, leadership is cultivated, and gender-specific themes are explored. Titled, “Sabiqoon”, which translates to “those who rush to complete acts of good deeds,” the MAS Sabiqoon Sisters Halaqah also creates a community of sisters that can be found in different Muslim spaces across Brooklyn. Check out our IG page!

Different Halaqat for Different Life Stages

  • Brothers Only 13+: Fridays at 8:30PM

    Sisters Only 13+: Fridays 6PM

    Pre-Teens Ages 12-14: Saturdays 12pm-2pm

    Pre-Teens Ages 9-11: Saturdays 2PM-4PM

    Young Professionals 18+: Thursdays 7:30PM

As a young person moves through different life stages, their interests and spiritual needs evolve and require specialized curriculums, relevant mentors, and unique ways to engage their interest. That’s why we have different halaqat for young people who are at different points of their lives.

Personal and Professional Development (PPDP):

College and Career Prep Class

  • Oftentimes, our school system lacks the necessary resources and education to properly prepare students for college and future careers, especially Muslim students who have unique backgrounds, cultures, considerations, and interests. Our College and Career Prep Class, led by young Muslim professionals, aims to fill that gap.

Writing Workshop

  • The ability to write professionally can open up doors of opportunity for our youth. Whetherit be college essays, cover letters for scholarship applications – excellent writing skills can be a young person’s ticket to success. That’s why we hold weekly writing workshops, led by professionals, on Sundays. Stay tuned for our next cohort starting soon!

After-School Tutoring

  • As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, young students have fallen behind in their learning, social skills, and academic progress, which can result in development delays, mental health deterioration, and detrimental long-term effects. Due to this reason, we’ve curated a special kids tutoring program that pairs intelligent tutors with kids seeking academic assistance through one-on-one in-person and/or virtual sessions! This also includes specialized testing tutoring for state-wide exams and SATs. Not only does this provide valuable academic assistance to youth who need it, but also provides employment opportunities for mature and eligible youth tutors looking for part-time jobs!

See more details on the flyer above. Apply for this season’s tutoring program here!

Career Fair

  • Our Career Fairs gather Muslim professionals from a variety of different industries – medicine, law, engineering, academia, tech – for a special forum where our youth can learn more about these industries, ask questions, network, and receive professional opportunities. Many young people are either still deciding what kind of career they want to pursue, or would like to know more about a profession they are interested in. These career fairs often lead to life-long mentorships, internships, jobs, and, at the very least, further clarity about important career decisions, which are all incredibly valuable for a young person's growth and professional development. Sign up here if you are a professional that is interested in speaking at our next Career Fair, or a young person who would like to attend!

Saturday Night Football League

  • Our Brothers’ Saturday Night Football League has been running for over 10 years! With 2-3 seasons a year, our football league offers our youth brothers the opportunity to stay physically fit (as the Sunnah recommends!), meet new brothers, and stay connected to the masjid.

Saturday Night Soccer League

  • Our Boys Saturday Soccer League has been running for 3 years and includes a teen division and a young adult division. It offers our youth an opportunity to stay physically fit, create bonds with their peers, learn discipline, and gets them off the streets at night!

Basketball Tournaments

  • Our basketball tournaments happen throughout the year for various occasions. Whether it’s “baskets for charity”, a Ramadan late-night basketball program, or a classic outdoor park basketball tournament, the tournaments build brotherhood and sisterhood, creating bonds to last a lifetime – all through the masjid.

Seasonal Trips

  • Apple-picking, skiing, hiking, beach days – These are some of the seasonal trips you can expect coming from the MYC Youth team! Check out our social media for our upcoming seasonal trips.

Camps

  • Summer camps, outdoor camping, winter cabins, Poconos stays – we love our camping trips here at MYC! Out of all of our projects, one of the most important programs in building true brotherhood and sisterhood between our youth are our camps. Our very own resident sheikh, Sh. Abdelrahman Badawy, attended our camps as a teenager, and called the youth camp, “a transformative experience in my spiritual journey as a teen.” Our camps are dynamic and goal-oriented, and include spiritual mentors, Islamic reminders, group prayers, team-building exercises, and efforts to create positive life-long memories, relationships, and most importantly, spiritual growth. Stay tuned for our next camp!

After-Halaqah Hangouts

  • Our weekly Halaqat are an excellent way to engage our youth spiritually, but they can only go so far socially in building community amongst our youth. That’s why we organize after-halaqah hangouts to ensure that our youth are not only learning through our halaqat, but also surrounding themselves with Muslim peers as life-long companions who they can rely on in times of need. These may include game nights, trivia, taco nights, a pick-up basketball game at the park, indoor sports, and more!

Sleepovers

  • They say you don’t really know someone until you sleep in the same house as them. Overnight stays at our center strengthen the bonds between our youth, as well as engage them in building positive spiritual habits such as Qiyam prayers, Fajr at the masjid, thikr, and healthy hygiene routines.

Watch Parties

  • Whether it’s the Superbowl, NBA Finals, a new movie release, or an Islamic lecture series, gathering around to watch educational or recreational productions in a halal environment can go a long way in building community amongst Muslim brothers and sisters.
